Presentation

Laid out in the early 19C, Place Foch (also known as Place des Palmiers) connects the old town with the old suburbs (now Rue Fesch). At the top of the square stands a statue of Napoleon dressed as a Roman consul, the work of the sculptor Massimiliano Laboureur from Rome. To the left of Rue Bonaparte, in a niche, stands a statue to the Madonna of Mercy (A Madonuccia), the patron saint of Ajaccio, whose feast day is celebrated on 18 March.
