Construite sur un promontoire rocheux en 1492 (date de la fondation d’Ajaccio), la citadelle ne compte alors qu’un simple « castello », un donjon et une enceinte basse. La défense de la ville se révélant insuffisante, des travaux sont entrepris à partir de 1553. Les fossés sont élargis, approfondis et reliés à la mer. Après le traité de Cateau-Cambresis en 1559, les génois donne à la citadelle son aspect actuel.

Built on a rocky promontory in 1492 (the date of the foundation of Ajaccio), the citadel now comprises no more than a simple ?castle?, a keep and a low wall. As it proved unable to defend the city, works were undertaken to improve the citadel?s defences in 1553, when the moats were widened, deepened and linked to the sea. After the Cateau-Cambresis treaty in 1559, the Genoese gave the citadel its present appearance.

"Costruita su un promontorio roccioso nel 1492 (data della fondazione di Ajaccio), la cittadella allora vantava un semplice 'castello', un torrione e una cinta bassa che non bastavano a difendere la città. Nel 1553 iniziarono i lavori per fortificarla. Il fossato venne ampliato, approfondito e collegato al mare. Dopo il Trattato di Cateau-Cambresis nel 1559, la cittadella genovese acquista il suo aspetto attuale."
