Thousands of protected animal species

Scandola covers 900 hectares of land and 1,000 hectares of sea, encompassing the Girolata peninsula. It is a massive porphyry (purple-colored magmatic rock) made up of oddly shaped cliffs, forged by the wind and the movement of water. Between the blue of the Mediterranean, the green of the vegetation, and the intense red of the rock, there is an exceptional palette of colors making the reserve a landscape of wonder. The protection of the environment is ensured by a distance from the city and a complete ban on fishing, diving, camping ... The balance is maintained like nowhere else in the Mediterranean. Several thousand animal species are recorded in Scandola. On the land, wild boars, reptiles, foxes, amphibians, bats (the "mastiff", the largest in Europe) share the territory. There are also the golden eagles, peregrine falcons, gulls and many other birds that come to nest on the cliffs. The marine life is also captivating, composed of molluscs and 243 species of fish enumerated.

Exceptional vegetation

Despite a dry climate, the vegetation on the reserve is dense. Scandola is mostly covered by scrub, we find lavender, heather, strawberry trees, as well as myrtles, holm oaks, clinging to the cliffs. Among other species, mushrooms, ferns, pines, or sarsaparilla make up the flora of the reserve. On the marine side, 450 kinds of algae have been identified.
