Mairie annexe, Ponte Nuovo, 20235 Castello-di-Rostino
It was at Ponte Nuovo on 9 May 1769 that the decisive battle between the Corsican troops led by General Pascal Paoli and the armies of the king of France, Louis XV, took place. This battle marked the end of the young Corsican republic founded in 1755 despite claims of suzerainty by the Republic of Genoa. Every year on the anniversary of this defeat, the historic and symbolic village of Ponte Nuovo organises a colourful ceremony which takes place near the broken arch of the bridge. Visitors with an interest in history can rent audio-guides at the "A Memoria" centre on the N193 at Ponte Nuovo, which also has a small museum dedicated to Pascal Paoli. In June, Ponte Nuovo hosts a weekend fair dedicated to fishing and hunting (dates vary from year to year; for information contact the town hall on 33 (0) 4 95 38 61 09). Don't miss the fascinating "Village de pierres" or "Village imaginaire" on the Bastia road out of the village (turn left immediately after the bridge). This miniature village features reproductions of Corsica's most interesting buildings made from Brando and Lauze stone.
