In this square, in 1938, a monument to the city?s most famous son was erected. His major victories and greatest achievements are remembered on an immense granite panel, where the people of Ajaccio have engraved the immortal words: ?We Have Seen His First Magnificent Steps Towards the Gates of Heaven? The monument has a statue of the Emperor at its summit, dressed in the uniform of Colonel of the Garde, by the sculptor Seurre. This is a replica of the statue that was originally installed at the top of the Vendôme Column in Paris and which today sits in the courtyard of the Invalides
