Presentation

The picturesque commune of Murato is the largest village in the Nebbio region. Two magnificent churches stand within its walls - the 12C San Michele and the Église de l'Annonciation, which houses a 16C canvas. It is said that this painting, which depicts Mary Magdalene, is a work of the Venetian School. This pretty village is also renowned for its excellent traditionally baked bread. Also worth a visit is Le Palais de la Monnaie Corse, a stone and lauze house built in 1437 by the Morati family. It was once occupied by Giuseppe Barbaggi, as well as the sub-prefect of Bastia, Tiburzio Morati, who hosted Prosper Mérimée here on 1 October 1839. Mérimée was reported to have been delighted with the "magnificent ham" he tasted here. The grandson of Tiburzio Morati, François de Morati-Gentile, was the great-nephew, on his mother's side, of Colomba Carabelli, the widow of Bartoli de Fozzano and the inspiration behind Mérimée's novel Colomba. Another sight not to be missed is the summit of the Col San Stefano 12.5km south of Saint-Florent between Oletta and Murato, with its stunning views of Saint-Florent bay and the Nebbio mountains.
