According to legend, the Escalier du Roy d'Aragon in Bonifacio, a listed historic monument and picturesque site in Corsica, was carved out of the limestone cliff in one night by the troops of the King of Aragon in 1420. In reality, the staircase was dug to access the Saint-Barthélemy well, a freshwater well. Unfortunately, the well is no longer in use and the grotto is closed to the public.
Made up of 189 steps, each as irregular as the next, it's on the way down that you'll marvel at the incredible 180° views over the sea, Sardinia and the cliffs. Once you reach the bottom, you'll be just a few metres above the sea on a path cut into the cliffs and you'll walk along turquoise-blue water.
Children who manage to climb the 189 steps are rewarded with a diploma for their courage!
It's a unique Mediterranean experience that combines a physical challenge with centuries-old history!
To visit this very special site, you need to be physically fit and respect the safety rules. Please read the rules for visiting the Escalier du Roy Aragon before coming.
Access to the staircase is restricted to people wearing flat, closed-toe shoes (flip-flops, flip-flops and shoes with heels are not permitted). Helmets are available for use during the tour.
