Presentation

A Baroque jewel set in the Citadel, this oratory has a Baroque décor that is painted, sculpted, stuccoed and gilded. The rocailles and cherubs, the curves and counter-curves evoke the patterns and profiles of a Louis XV salon. Built on ground belonging to the Basilica Saint Jean de Latran, this is actually Vatican land. The papal coats of arms which surmount the C18th high altar ciborium are a reminder of this. The fine retable depicting the Annunciation is by Filiberto. The chapel of the Christ Noir des Miracles is decorated with a beautiful Renaissance period coffer ceiling. The Black Christ, in the alcove above the altar, was found at sea by two anchovy fishermen in 1428.
