The Citadel of Corte was built in 1420 by Vincentello d'Istria, Corsican feudal lord who had conquered the city. Corte, strengthened city held by Gênovese, joined France in 1553 but in 1559 the treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis restores Corsica and Corte to the Genovese. The French seize sit again in 1734 and Pasquale Paoli (politician and Corsican general) made Corte the capital of the Corsican independent nation from 1755 to 1769. The Citadel invits you to discover the old barracks, the prisons and the tower of the eyrie; it shelters the museums of Art and History of Corsica, the Funds regional of Contemporary art as well as the Tourist office. Visit of the citadel is only possible while visiting the Museum of Corsica
