With a population of 1,200, the commune of Sari-Solenzara extends over an area of 74km² and consists of small valleys surrounded by hills and small mountains. In the 1970s this coastline was given the name ""Côte des Nacres"" after the large triangular-shaped mother-of-pearl shell. Solenzara, a village dating from the 19C, takes its name from the nearby river. The local economy, based mainly on agriculture and stock raising, opened up to tourism in the 1960s. The marina was created a little later and Solenzara is now a very lively seaside resort in summer. The marina, which has 450 berths, adds undeniable charm to the village. Take time to enjoy an ice-cream at one of the port's many ice-cream parlours, head out on a scuba-diving trip or even rent a boat to explore the region's coastline. The village centre has numerous shops, hotels, bars and restaurants. Solenzara has a large beach which is directly accessible from the marina. Further south, the fine sandy beach at Canella lies in a charming natural cove and has plenty of places to eat. Facilities at Favona beach on the boundary of the commune include snack bars and a sailing centre. The inland area offers a wide choice of attractive itineraries for hikers and mountain bikers, with its many footpaths, varied flora and fauna and verdant vegetation. The village of Sari overlooks the plain and enjoys splendid views of much of the eastern coast. Sari is dominated by Monte Santu (599m), which boasts exceptional views of the Solenzara river and the famous Aiguilles de Bavella. Mountaineering enthusiasts can climb at a nearby site equipped with climbing hooks.
