The main road runs alongside the vast, fenced-in vineyard, access to which is guarded by a large, openwork gate. We arrive at the Tanella estate, not far from the airport. With a surface area of 80 hectares, it stands on the rolling plain the mountains. In the middle of the plot, arbutus, broom and heather complement the maquis vegetation, creating a balanced ecosystem. The clay contrasts with the tender-green leaves of the vines. The rows reach for the sea. Marc-Aurèle, Alexandra's brother, approaches us. "Our farm is certified HVE, Haute Valeur Environnementale level 3. We encourage biodiversity. It complements the crops and preserves soil fertility. It also develops synergies that protect wildlife and pollinators," he says.
SMALL CHRONICLE
The family vineyard has been handed down from father to son since 1855, the year the first vines were planted. Since then, five generations have succeeded one another. "In the days of our grandparents, the quality of the wine was not a criterion for purchase, and production was sold in bulk. When our father took over in 1975, he decided to bottle his wine. Our parents then turned their attention research into taste, and so the cuvée tradition du domaine de Tanella was created. The quest for quality led them to create their first prestige cuvée, Cuvée Alexandra", when my sister was born in 1991. Fifteen years later, a second cuvée, "Clos Marc-Aurèle", bore my name. I've always had a passion for vines and the wine-making know-how. Our father gradually stepped away from the estate's activities and gradually let us take over, along with my sister, but he still follows us and advises us carefully," explains Marc-Aurèle. Today, the siblings share the responsibilities, and all decisions are taken as a family. Alexandra joined the domaine after finishing business school eight years ago. Her first task was to learn how to work in the cellar vinification and ageing of the wines, which today enables her to set the pace during the harvest. The administrative and social side of the business and social aspects of the estate's management. With his farming diploma in hand, Marc-Aurèle is now a young farmer and has joined the team to take care of the vineyard and cellar. In symbiosis, brother and sister are committed to innovation, perpetuate and modernize their father's work according to his philosophy. "Our customers are faithful to the authenticity of our wines. Taste is an integral part of the quality and identity of all our cuvées, and each parcel is precisely identified," says Marc-Aurèle. "Our father instilled in us a respect for tradition, the value of hard work rigor in vinification and the art we are proud to elaborate our new cuvées, sharing memories, desires and emotions," continues Alexandra.
RUNNING THE VINEYARD
The vineyard is worked by a team of ten employees who use the latest the latest equipment and the best technologies to make vineyard work easier and comfort of the men. The vineyard is managed using integrated farming methods and was awarded the HVE label a few years ago. To preserve the environment, the estate has even abolished chemical weeding. The low relief provides a homogeneous microclimate but is very much exposed to the whims of the sky. The soil, mostly clay-granitic, varies from plot-to-plot pebbles, sand and clay. The vines develop aromatic aromatic expressions perceptible in the wines, which identify the cuvées. The vines, aged from 7 to 40 years, are planted with Sciaccarellu, Cinsault, Vermentinu, Niellucciu, Syrah, Carcaghjolu Neru and Minustellu. Depending on the type of wine type of wine required. For example, Cinsault, destined for a light rosé, will be pruned long, while Syrah will be pruned short. Jean-Baptiste's strategy, their father, is to renew the plants on 4 to 6 hectares every year.
THE QUEST FOR EXPRESSION
In an innovative approach, the brother and sister structure the vineyard, study pruning and yield records and test plots to extract the best. The operations are complicated to carry out in micro-parcels, but the end result is higher quality and more concentrated. They also venture to create new cuvées using new winemaking techniques. Two years ago, they experimented with pellicular maceration to perfect the cuvée supérieure "Suarte" Blanc. They used the principle of carbonic maceration for their "Marie-Antoinette" cuvée de cœur, a cuvée that expresses red fruitiness and complexity. They are committed to innovation to open up ambitious, high-quality product ranges and styles.
IN THE CELLAR
Ageing is an important part of Domaine de Tanella's business. Always with a view to reinvente cuvées, they choose oak barrels and demi-muids from different coopers: Baron, Chassin, Seguin Moreau... who's different toasting's give the wine an aromatic palette. The cellar is equipped with voluminous concrete and stainless-steel vats, as well as a cellar of French oak barrels and demi-muids. Because the 400,000-bottle production run is running out of space, their future will be to build, fit out and equip a superb cellar in the middle of the vineyards!
