This true ‘green lung’ of the Bastia area has a surface area of 1,790 hectares (with a water level of 1,450 hectares) and has been classified as a nature reserve since 1994.

This vast body of water is the largest on the island and one of the last refuges for breeding and migratory birds.

Site of exceptional ecological interest, it’s a refuge for over 200 species of aquatic birds. An observation site allows you to see the colourful silhouette of a kingfisher, the flight of the reed harrier and the various migratory birds that pass by the pond, such as the flamingo.

You can wander the 1.5km discovery trail alone, or accompanied by a reserve organiser who will explain all the riches of this very fragile wetland – and visit the new Fortin ecomuseum.

In addition to being a protected site acting for the protection of nature, the site carried out a real environmental awareness exercise.

THE FORTIN ECOMUSEUM is located at the heart of the reserve -

Open Tuesday to Saturday 9am-12pm and 1-5pm.- 2€ and 4 € for a guided tour (only for groups and by reservation, June to September).
