29-Can you travel around the island by train?

Yes. Services operate between Ajaccio, Bastia, Calvi and Corte and some of the island’s mountain villages. Corsican Railways operates three lines throughout the year, running four daily return trips: Ajaccio-Corte-Bastia, Bastia-Ponte, Leccia-Calvi and Calvi-Ajaccio.

Much more than just a way of getting around, local Corsican trains are perfect for excursions around the island, especially the Ajaccio-Corte section, which climbs up to an altitude of 900m and offers magnificent views of Corsica’s mountain peaks. This trip is also attractive in winter, when the surrounding countryside is covered with snow. The other interesting route is the "Balagne tramway" which runs along the coast between Calvi and Ile-Rousse, stopping at different beaches between the two towns en route. This trip takes 50 minutes and operates in the summer season only (from mid-April to late October).
