The frescoed chapels of Corsica

Priceless treasures, a major religious heritage

Let's discover the 12 listed fresco chapels of Corsica... All listed or classified as Historic Monuments, these buildings are dated between the 15th century and the 16th century.

The 12 classified fresco chapels of Corsica were, at the dawn of the Renaissance and according to researchers' estimates, around 200. They represent not only an inestimable heritage treasure but also a major tourist asset for the regions where they are located: Boziu, Rustinu, Casaluna region adjoining Boziu, Cap Corse, Bastia region, Balagne and Aghja Nova in Central Corsica. All listed or classified as Historic Monuments, these buildings date between the 15th and 16th centuries.

In 2014, two major decorations were updated: the frescoes of the Parish Church of Omessa, and those of the Oratory of the Brotherhood of Poghju Marinacciu in Castagniccia. It is a real treasure hunt which is being carried out today in order to discover, then restore and safeguard this incredible heritage.

Given the invaluable heritage presented by these Chapels, it is strongly recommended to contact the Tourist Offices concerned to find out how to visit.

Prosper Mérimée, who was general inspector of historical monuments, wrote in 1834 in his “Notes from a trip to Corsica”: “It is the most elegant, the prettiest church that I have seen in Corsica”.
