An emblematic site of the Balagne, the citadel of Calvi overlooks the city offering a breathtaking view of the craftsmen’s route (Strada di l’Artigiani) and the hilltop villages of the region.
Marked by a numbered route and supported by an audioguide from the tourist office, the climb up is fascinating – and small cafes, restaurants and stalls provide pitstop places along the way.
The Saint Antoine oratory and the Saint Jean-Baptiste church are also en route. If you have time to pause, these sacred places are worth visiting.
And if your holiday dates coincide with Calvi’s cultural calendar, you may be lucky enough to attend a concert in the Poudrière.
Located in the old town not far from the shopping streets, the military citadel of Porto-Vecchio is nicknamed the “Bastion of France”. Today this historic place hosts painting and sculpture exhibitions, but also offers a remarkable view of the city.
The climb to the citadel of Bonifacio from the lower town is not for the unfit or infirm! If you don’t fancy the steps up from the port, you can take the little train to the top. The views are well worth the journey, from a series of winding alleyways, numerous vaulted passages and characterful old houses.
On your way, dare to push open the heavy doors of the churches: Santa Maria Maggiore and its buttresses, the Holy Cross and Saint Erasmus.
From the citadel is a great view of Cap Pertusato and across to Sardinia.
